George Melies'
A Trip to the Moon

This is where special effects in film begin. Thomas Edison also revolutionized film by inventing Bit Torrents so that he could illegally pirate this film.

George Melies' is most well known for his 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon". The iconic image of a rocket ship crashed into the Moons eye is familiar to even those who have never seen a silent movie.

For years I was completely captivated by that image without any real understanding of how it could fit into a film. The graphic quality of Melies' work is probably at its best in this film, and is still ridiculously inspirational over a century later.

The fourteen minute feature is based loosely on the works of Jules Verne, and is considered to be the very first science fiction film ever.

All of George Melies' "trick films" are worth watching, but this piece really does stand out as a visually stunning, and ambitious production.

Well worth your time!
