Jeff Mangum
Engine

This performance is from the "Bottom Lounge" in Chicago on 10/21/2008.

The band Neutral Milk Hotel is responsible for recording one of the greatest albums ever, In the Airplane Over the Sea , which also featured one of the greatest singles ever… Holland, 1945.

This song, Engine appeared as the B-Side of that single.

Here is great performance, which beautifully illustrates the power of Jeff Mangum's voice, and also features the accompaniment of Mr. Julian Koster on the "Singing Saw". What makes this performance significant is the fact that it was recorded in 2008.

As any fan of the band knows, Jeff Mangum has not participated in any kind of real public performance for the past decade. In many ways this absence has only added to the perception of In the Airplane over the Sea as a mysterious artistic triumph, with many of the mythical trappings of a Brian Wilson, or Syd Barrett story.

If you're interested in learning more about Jeff Mangum, or Neutral Milk Hotel , I highly recommend Kim Cooper's book (From the 33 1/3 series) entitled In the Airplane Over the Sea !
