Jon Stewart, On Crossfire
This clip of Jon Stewart’s appearance on CNN’s Crossfire is from October 15, 2004. Crossfire was a “Debate” show that ran for over twenty years. The show was cancelled shortly after this episode aired.
I consider myself extremely lucky to have experienced the events of this past week, and perhaps more importantly, relieved that the offensiveness of the last eight years can now sit in sharp contrast to the optimism I feel about the future.
In my office at work I have a quote from a 1968 interview with Steve Ditko framed on my wall which reads...
"Evil is powerless. A mind that refuses to accept or defend the truth, by that act, permits lies to exist, to give them respectability and influence, thereby undercutting and eventually destroying everything that is of real value. Destroyed, not by the power of evil, but by the good’s refusal to protect itself against an enemy that could exist only with good’s permission."
These words perfectly convey everything that is important to me. Collectively we as a people ARE responsible for any and all evil that we allow to exist through our own acceptance. Regardless of who you voted for in this election, I hope that you will take a moment to watch this clip which addresses these ideas through an exciting and rare moment of honesty.
